Tillage is the mechanical manipulation of soil — ploughing, harrowing, and levelling — done to create a favourable seedbed for a crop. Tilth is the result of that work: the physical condition of the soil, judged by how loose, crumbly, and well-aerated it is for root growth. In short, tillage is the operation; tilth is the outcome.

Objectives of tillage

A farmer does not disturb the soil for its own sake. Every tillage operation serves one or more practical goals that make the difference between a poor stand and a strong one:

  • Prepare a seedbed — a fine, firm layer where seed meets moist soil and germinates evenly.
  • Control weeds — mechanical uprooting before the crop establishes.
  • Improve aeration and water intake — loosened soil lets air and rain reach the root zone.
  • Incorporate residues and manures — mixing organic matter into the plough layer.
Exam tip

The one-line distinction examiners love: tillage is the practice, tilth is the condition. If a question asks for “the physical state of soil resulting from tillage”, the answer is tilth.

Primary vs secondary tillage

Tillage operations are grouped by depth and timing. Primary tillage is the first, heavy cut into the soil; secondary tillage is the lighter finishing work that follows.

What makes a good tilth

A good seedbed is not simply “loose soil”. A well-tilled field shows a mix of small, stable aggregates that hold moisture yet drain freely. Agronomists describe an ideal tilth as one where roughly half the soil volume is pore space, split between water and air.

Common mistake

Over-tillage destroys structure. Repeatedly pulverising a wet clay soil breaks aggregates into dust that later seals into a hard crust — the opposite of good tilth.

Modern tillage systems

Because ploughing is costly in fuel and can accelerate erosion, agronomy has moved toward doing less of it where the soil allows. Conservation tillage leaves at least 30% of crop residue on the surface, while zero tillage sows directly into undisturbed soil — a practice that has spread rapidly across the rice–wheat belt of north India.

Zero-till wheat after rice can save one to two irrigations and cut land-preparation cost sharply, which is why it is promoted heavily across Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.
